Fruit Tree Pruning with Harmonious Horticulture and Brambles Design Studio

Join our guests for an introduction to fruit tree pruning. Hunter and Lissy will walk participants through the basics of why pruning is important for Orchard health, the principles of pruning technique and provide a demo as well as an opportunity to take a hands on approach and practice on a variety of fruit tree species.

Participants are encouraged to bring gloves, loppers, pruning shears and dress appropriately for an early Spring day.

Your instructors:

Hunter Williford, Harmonious Horticulture

Landscaper & Master Gardener

Raised on a hobby farm in rural East Texas, Hunter experienced the wonders of nature from an early age. From exploring the piney woods to helping cultivate acres of crops, the beauty and genius of the natural world has brought him to his current career as a horticulturist. Since moving to the Olympic Peninsula in 2015, Hunter has worked in some of the Pacific Northwest’s loveliest gardens.

From country estates to urban gardens, each landscape has required its own unique need for cultivation and management, all curated by Hunter himself. Using a naturalistic approach to pruning and other landscape maintenance needs, Hunter maintains the integrity of your plant’s natural habit and health. As a Master Gardener and professional horticulturalist, his priority is to ensure that your landscape is thriving with little to no ecological disturbance.

Lissy Moriarty, Brambles Design Studio

Born and raised in Joyce, WA and lived and educated around the world, Lissy is a landscape designer finding inspiration from exploring the natural environment and observing the nuances of nature along the way. Lissy grew up in the countryside and she has spent her life gardening, foraging, and arranging - developing a keen knack for transforming materials from nature into magical elements of our everyday lives.

Lissy graduated from California Polytechnic in San Luis Obispo, CA with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Environmental Plant Science in 2016 and from Writtle University College in Essex, UK with a Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture in 2023. Over the past ten years, Lissy has worked in New Zealand, Australia and in the Pacific Northwest leading crews to maintain and install gardens. After growing her design skills in England, she has established her own ecological design business, Brambles Design Studio, with the desire to share her passion of gardening and orchestrate spaces for those that wish to gather, celebrate, and cherish the landscapes around them.

Biochar: Process and Application with Wassail Ecological Landcare

Biochar: Process and Application with Wassail Ecological Landcare

Come gather 'round the fire and let's chat about Biochar and Carbon Sequestration! We will be utilizing the Ring of Fire Flame-cap Kiln and working through the woody biomass that's been set aside for us on the ranch. While we convert wood to carbon, we will be in conversation about the role of humans and fire on the landscape, the benefits of onsite nutrient cycling, biochar inoculation, and its many applications.

Folks from Wassail Landcare will be on hand to answer any questions. We will have a collection of Biochar and regenerative forestry-related books on hand to peruse.

This workshop is hands-on, and we will be working with high temperatures; we recommend wearing non-synthetic work clothes and leather gloves. If folks stay to help with the post-burn processing we recommend either cloth bandanas or N95 masks, it can get a bit dusty with the ash and fine charcoal powder.

Your Instructor

Mark Doucette, Wassail Ecological Landcare

Wassail Landcare is a family-operated and community-supported small business that strives to connect people and landscapes through human-powered and community-scale land stewardship projects. Mark's background is in forestry, restoration, and arboreal horticulture. When not planning and implementing habitat enhancement projects, Wassail's work leans heavily into heritage orchard preservation. Our orchard pruning work provides us with an abundance of materials which we then convert into biochar to be used in future projects or occasionally sold/bartered to local farms and vineyards.
